Scheduling
When I tested Workyard’s scheduling, the drag-and-drop calendar sped up assigning crews as well as reassigning emergency jobs. I could see who was nearest to a job and move assignments in seconds. Workyard’s live team map gives a clear, real-time view of field crews so dispatchers stop guessing and start sending the right technicians.
(Tip: Check out our top picks for The 7 Best Field Service Scheduling Software Solutions for 2025.)
Aside from job tracking and GPS tracking, you can use Workyard’s visual calendar and dashboard to keep punch list timelines under control.
To assign team members to projects and tasks, simply drag and drop entries on the visual calendar.
You can use Workyard’s construction scheduling software to:
- Schedule multiple jobs for any team member (or several team members to the same job)
- Assign job duration from start to completion
- Add to-do checklists to each job
- Track scheduled jobs by status

Job Costing
Knowing the exact job cost is critical for running a successful plumbing business. Workyard’s job costing tools give you a clear view of your labor costs, helping you stay profitable and organized.
I rely on Workyard’s live cost tracking to flag jobs creeping over budget. Every time card updates job costs immediately, which gives me the chance to adjust labor or materials before a project goes irreversibly in the red.
Live Cost Tracking
Every time card is analyzed instantly, so you always know the current cost of a project.
For example, if labor costs for a commercial plumbing job start to exceed the budget, you’ll know immediately and can take action to bring costs back in line.

Detailed Cost Breakdown
Workyard lets you break down costs by employee, job type, or date. This helps you understand where your money is going.
For instance, for a new bathroom installation, you can separate costs for plumbing rough-ins, fixture installation, and final inspections, ensuring you have a clear picture of the project’s profitability.
Integration with Accounting Systems
Workyard syncs with popular accounting software like QuickBooks and Gusto, saving you time and reducing manual errors.
For example, instead of manually entering hours into QuickBooks for payroll, Workyard automatically transfers the data, making payroll processing fast and error-free.
GPS Time Tracking
I’ve tested Workyard in the office and on the road, and both times it passed the strictest accuracy tests with flying colors. With Workyard’s GPS Time Tracking, you can ensure that every minute is accounted for without manual input. This feature eliminates payroll mistakes, prevents time theft, and improves billing accuracy.
Automatic Clock-Ins and Clock-Outs
Workyard uses geofencing technology to clock plumbers in when they arrive at a job site and clock them out when they leave. This automation saves time and ensures time records are always correct.
For example, when a plumber arrives at a home for a repair job, Workyard automatically clocks them in. Once the job is done and they leave, they’re automatically clocked out—no manual action required.
Real-Time Tracking
Managers can see where their plumbers are at any moment, allowing them to respond quickly to emergencies and plan routes efficiently.
For instance, if a customer calls with a broken water pipe, Workyard helps the dispatcher find the closest plumber and send them to the site without delays.
Mileage Tracking
Workyard tracks vehicle trips between jobs, ensuring accurate mileage records for reimbursements and better fuel management.
Imagine a plumber visiting multiple job sites in a day. Workyard automatically logs the miles they drive, making it simple to calculate reimbursements and track vehicle use.
Job Tracking
Workyard’s job-tracking software is designed to help you track tasks and jobs on the field without leaving your office. Built by construction industry professionals, Workyard addresses pain points in construction management including worker and job tracking, scheduling, and time theft prevention.
Without proper delegation and project ownership, tasks can get passed around during the punch list stage. Workyard’s job tracking dashboard helps you keep tabs on assignments and worker activity.
Use Workyard to:
- Capture job progress with the mobile app
- Increase transparency around project activity
- Speed up business processes
- Improve billing and job estimates with labor costs
Workyard provides an overview of punch list tasks and project data, including:
- Labor time and costs. Every timecard submission includes hours worked per job and/or cost codes.
- Site visits. Every employee clock-in and clock-out is automatically captured.
- Worksite vehicle trips. Relevant driving trips to each job site are tracked and recorded.
- Project updates. Every worker assigned to a job can share progress updates with notes and photos.
- Receipts. Team members have the autonomy to record receipts and attach them to the relevant job.

Mobile time clocks help service technicians record their hours automatically and sync them to the timesheet. This eliminates the need to manually sort and compile physical timesheets for field-based teams like the one managed by the iOS user below.
I have tried other apps that claim to do time tracking and they end up being so difficult to use that my guys just give up. What’s the point of having an app to track time if nobody uses it? I was skeptical about giving another one a shot but Bill gave me a ring and convinced me to try the free trial. I’m glad he did! My crew uses it every day and I’m finally getting all the info I need with a few mouse clicks instead of searching through binders of time sheets like before.
Like the Android user below, plumbing businesses can benefit from software with automatic clock-in and real-time location tracking. This ensures the right job is dispatched to the nearest and most qualified plumbing technician.
App is amazing, it allows me as a technician if I accidentally forget to sign in to a customer that I’ll have proof I was there with the GPS location. It’s overall makes it easier on management because they can see where all the techs are and when new customers call in they’re able to call the nearest tech to pick up more business. Overall a very needed app for any business that has several techs or employees that are mobile. And it makes tracking hours easy.
Management employees love how Workyard simplifies tasks for both field techs and office workers. The Capterra user below points out a potential weakness, suggesting she’s not fully familiar with Workyard offline capabilities.
Pros: I love Workyard for the gps tracking, time tracking and payroll import. It makes my life so much easier
Cons: The only thing I don’t like about it is in some remote rural areas it doesn’t work but it does work 99% of the time.
In a nutshell
Jobber is a field service management platform designed to help small trade businesses stay organized from scheduling to invoicing. For plumbing companies, it’s especially useful thanks to its built-in CRM that keeps all customer communications including emails, texts, and booking confirmations in one place.
I like that I can search jobs and clients with its built-in search function. Jobber’s customer database can help you recall any past interactions or service details when a customer calls, making your business appear more professional and attentive. Plus, the ability to tag contacts as leads helps you prioritize and convert potential customers into loyal clients without much hassle.
However, Jobber does have room for improvement, especially in its reporting features. Many users find the generated reports to be quite basic, often requiring significant tweaking in Excel to extract meaningful insights. This can be a bit frustrating when you’re trying to analyze your business’s performance quickly.
The lack of customization options, like creating custom fields or job-specific fields, further limits the usefulness of Jobber’s reports. For instance, if you need detailed metrics on emergency plumbing jobs versus regular maintenance calls, you’ll likely find the app’s reporting capabilities lacking.

The iOS user below shares how Jobber has helped their company successfully dispatch and route jobs but finds its reporting feature a bit underwhelming.
Emisydet’s iOS Review for Jobber:
Great organization tool – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“We love Jobber for logistics, organizing routes, setting up and keeping track of one-off and recurring jobs, materials, chemical services, etc, also the ability to upload pics and notes and to make changes to routes or job details without having to track down crews working on loud equipment. We don’t use the app for estimating, invoicing, or communicating with customers so we can’t speak to those features. The reports are very basic and have a lot of room for improvement – hence 4 stars. When we download reports we have to heavily edit them in excel to be useful. That gets annoying bc of time required which no landscaper has to spare.”
One of Jobber’s strong suits is its customer support. With email, chat, and phone support available across all plans, Android users like the one below can get the assistance they need anytime.
WRCS Cleaning’s Google Play Review of Jobber:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Responsive support, they’re helping me work through issues with the new version..”
While the Capterra user below believes Jobber can be a huge help for small plumbing businesses, the app’s reporting features could be improved.
Rich A.’s Capterra Review of Jobber:
Jobber – My Business OSS – ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Pros: Having a system that can be quickly and easily implemented and used by small business that incorporates features including integrates that addresses ‘quote to cash’ work flow was essential. Jobber does the job nicely, quickly, easily and is quite affordable for any small business. It integrates nicely with financial systems such as QuickBooks too.
Cons: Reporting is weak with the version I currently have. There are some standard reports that provide some fair data qualities but to customize reports using custom fields or job fields is quite weak. Exporting any report to Excel does not work well. I dont get the attachment file when attempting.”
In a nutshell
BuildOps is an all-in-one field service management solution tailored for commercial contractors. It’s built to connect your office and field teams, making it ideal for plumbing businesses managing large-scale or recurring service contracts.
One thing I like right away about BuildOps is its streamlined quoting system, which eliminates needless juggling multiple versions of the same quote. You can generate a quote, monitor its changes, and maintain a comprehensive history of all communications with your customers. BuildOps’ quotes builder also lets you follow up with clients who haven’t responded, all from the same interface. You can also enhance your quotes with photos and videos to boost approval rates.
Whether you’re on-site or in the office, the system accommodates both scenarios, allowing technicians or office managers to handle the quoting process. Once a quote is approved, it seamlessly converts into a job for scheduling, making the transition from prospect to project smooth and efficient.
I also like the app’s ‘Fleet Management’ feature which is directly integrated with its dispatch board, giving me a bird’s eye view of technicians in real time.
However, the app’s native integration options are somewhat limited. While you can connect BuildOps with popular accounting software like QuickBooks, Spectrum, Vista, and Sage, it doesn’t support a wider range of integrations that could benefit businesses using other tools.

After one year of using BuildOps, the iOS user below rates its performance as satisfactory overall despite noting that the “transition was not smooth.”
ShellBC’s iOS Review of BuildOps:
Almost a year – ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“In May we will be one year from ‘go live’. We split from one project management/service/accounting package to Build Ops and Quick books. The transition was not smooth, but the overall product is great. Cutting back on paper every day and creating more efficient workflows. Our customer success manager meets with us every 2 weeks to answer questions that help us through training and questions. No regrets in choice of software.”
BuildOps caters specifically to commercial contractors. With robust features built to meet the needs of its target market, it’s no surprise users (like the one below) are giving it a thumbs-up.
Christopher Williams’ Google Play Review of BuildOps:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I have about 20 years total experience as a service manager for a mechanical contractor I have been exposed to multiple service platforms that supposedly cater to service in our industry. This platform is by far the most well designed software for a mechanical contractor. If you’re interested in running a shop with efficiency and metrics that can back up any budgeting need or request this is your platform. Highly recommend.”
Nothing beats the opinion of someone who has been on the road and has hands-on experience using BuildOps. The Capterra user below gives the app a favorable rating but explains in detail how it can be improved further.
Brad C.’s Capterra Review of BuildOps:
Feedback from the field – ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“While there have been some good developments on the reporting side of BuildOps, it is imperative that the reporting functionality is improved. BuildOps is our primary platform, and where all of the information we need to understand our business and make strategic decision resides. Therefore, we need to have quick, easy to access, and most importantly accurate reports. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case, yet.I would also like to see some improvements on the invoicing of Service Agreements. Ideally, the workflow for invoicing recurring billing would be the same as all other service invoicing. This would be very beneficial for us.Also, as a smaller company, our management team performs several different roles. As such, we are often out on-the-road, and with customers. So, it would be nice if BuildOps Mobile allowed our leaders to see visit summaries from the app, so we would have instant access to the information, to more efficiently and effectively keep our customers updated, without having to pull out our computers.”
In a nutshell
Housecall Pro is a user-friendly plumbing software designed with small to mid-sized service businesses in mind.
Its built-in invoicing and service estimates also streamline the workflow by allowing plumbing technicians to easily convert estimates into scheduled jobs and vice versa. This feature significantly reduces administrative tasks, enabling them to focus more on the actual work rather than paperwork.
I also appreciate being able to quickly access customer details and insights on its dashboard, including customer lifetime value and related files/documents.
However, one major drawback is Housecall Pro’s map-based location tracking, which isn’t updated in real time. This can be frustrating for dispatchers who need to assign jobs to the nearest available technician quickly. For instance, if a dispatcher is trying to reroute a plumber to an urgent call, the delay in location updates can lead to inefficiencies and slower response times.
Housecall Pro offers a flat cost for up to 15 users, making it affordable for small contractors or plumbing businesses. This pricing model allows them to leverage professional-grade tools without breaking the bank.

Compared to other plumbing software catering to larger enterprises, Housecall Pro offers more affordable options. The pricing appeals to smaller, family-run businesses like the one the iOS user below is working for.
jimmer 101’s iOS Review of Housecall Pro:
Long time subscriber ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“It’s affordable when compared to the other high priced software programs that primarily cater to large companies. House Call Pro has found their niche in smaller family run business businesses. We highly recommend!”
The Android user below finds Housecall Pro’s web app easier and more intuitive to use than its mobile counterpart.
Ja’ala Broome’s Google Play Review of Housecall Pro:
⭐
“The app is only useful for clocking in and out. I can’t do much outside of that. I can track my time on each job, message clients and create jobs etc but it’s limited. What I do on the laptop is much better. I don’t like the time clock not notifying me if I’m still clocked in. Job descriptions vary from laptop to phone so I’ll have to edit and add regularly service descriptions instead of them being saved. Paystubs are not available. There is so much more. Can someone reach out to me, please?”
The Capterra user review below gives Housecall Pro’s service estimate tool a thumbs up but wishes the software had features to help promote the business as well. Housecall Pro can indeed help with marketing, but it requires integrations with third-party tools.
Alison E.’s Capterra Review of Housecall Pro:
Housecleaning pro is a must try – ⭐⭐⭐
“Pros: Very simply you can get your clients put into the system as well as gage your estimates with a great tool.
Cons: Maybe more marketing aspects to help with new clients”
In a nutshell
FieldEdge is a long-standing field service management solution tailored for trade professionals, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractors. Its built-in work order management system provides dispatchers and plumbing technicians with all the necessary tools to deliver customized service.
Each time a customer calls, a work order page shows up containing the complete history of every job quoted or completed, along with detailed invoices, current equipment used by customers, and other critical details.
With a comprehensive work order history at their fingertips, plumbing techs can arrive at the location fully prepared, leading to higher customer satisfaction and fewer return visits.
I also like that I (and team admins like you) can customize its feature-rich dashboard to fit daily workflows. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible even to non-tech experts.
However, one significant limitation of FieldEdge is the lack of advanced routing capabilities for field technicians. This could potentially lead to inefficient travel times and increased fuel costs, especially for businesses that cover a wide service area.
Additionally, FieldEdge’s price point might be a concern for smaller, more agile plumbing businesses. The extensive features come at a premium, which may not be justifiable for those operating on a tighter budget.

Plumbing techs need quick access to work orders while in the field. As the iOS user below recounts, glitches that cause the app to freeze are a recipe for a bad user experience.
Service Field Tech’s iOS Review of FieldEdge:
Frustrating – ⭐⭐
“The app is frustrating to use. Work orders won’t open up, selecting certain functions won’t open up. App freezes. At one point it was attempting to load the history page of a previous job, and it just stayed on the loading screen. I forced closed out of the app multiple times and it would just revert back to the page. Only until I actually deleted the app and reinstalled it did it work again.”
Android experience is no different. As the user review below explains, FieldEdge’s mobile app stopped working while the technician was in the middle of a task, causing unnecessary delay.
Raymond Tyler’s Google Play Review of FieldEdge:
⭐
“The program is fine for the majority of my companies needs. Like most it has issues. The biggest problem is the Mobil version. It constantly crashes, stops working at random or will change settings on at random. There are times it will randomly leave technicians without ability to even see the prices in our price book or even certain items that were previously accessible. It usually takes multiple attempts at deleting, updating, installing the program for the features to return.”
FieldEdge gets more positive reviews on Capterra. While the user below gives it four starts, he still finds the onboarding process and the app’s reporting feature underwhelming.
Jerry C.’s Capterra Review:
After 6 months with FieldEdge – ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Overall: The on boarding was not very good. Spent a lot of time with the help desk. It has gotten a lot better since the beginning.
Pros: Helps bring your company into the digital age.
Cons: Lack of reporting customization. Wish there was a way to back up to Google calendar in case of an outage.”

Knowify is a field service and project management platform built to give both the office and field teams visibility into real-time job costs, materials, labor, and profitability.
Either from scratch or using Knowify’s customizable templates, I can input cost estimates and instantly see the estimated profitability. This helps in adjusting customer quotes on the fly to ensure healthy profit margins.
The added convenience of converting project budgets into professional, e-signable proposals in seconds means less time spent on paperwork and more time focused on delivering quality service.
On the downside, Knowify’s scheduling features leave much to be desired, especially for those on the basic plan.
The app’s scheduling board, split into three confusing sections — corporate calendar, job board, and resource day — lacks intuitive design and visual appeal. I felt that this setup can be quite perplexing and will likely require a learning curve, making it less ideal for those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy.

An accurate time clock helps plumbing technicians become more accountable for their hours. However, the iOS user below shares why Knowify’s lackluster time-tracking feature makes this almost impossible.
Nick’s iOS Review of Knowify:
Great company, terrible app – ⭐⭐
“Knowify has been the core software for my company for about 2 years. The customer support is excellent and the value is incredible for what we do. That being said the application causes a lot of work on the back end for me. Correcting time entries, telling the employees to refresh the app multiple times before the app will reflect the desktop schedule, offline mode not working at all, etc.”
Knowify’s weak time-tracking capabilities are also evident in Android devices, as the user below reported.
Dan Bell’s Google Play Review of Knowify:
⭐
“TERRIBLE! GPS location fails to be correct most of the time. It’s probably because it uses Google maps and fails to update it. Glitches out when clocking in and out, requiring it to be manually corrected too frequently. Fails to update notes at times. Doesn’t tell you the times you clock in and out, only the total time for the clocked in period.”
The Capterra user review below likes Knowify as a subcontractor management tool, with details on where the software excels and where it can be improved.
Tonya S.’s Capterra Review of Knowify:
Absolutely the best job costing app for subcontractors and trades that integrates with QuickBooks – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Pros: The 2-way sync with QuickBooks; the ability to create AIA style billings directly out of the program (no duplicate entering); the integrations with great apps like ClockShark and Tsheets; the great dashboard on which you can monitor the profitability of each current job; the ease with which you can budget and bid from within the software; the wealth of available reports; and so much more.
Cons: Some improvements could be made to the service ticket side of the program to make it more comprehensive; if a PO is fulfilled in QuickBooks there is no way to match it in Knowify, so it has to be closed out manually on the Knowify side.”
In a nutshell
Field Complete is a field service management solution built for small to mid-sized plumbing and trade contractors seeking a simple, affordable all-in-one field service app.
Its subcontractor management feature allows plumbing companies to seamlessly split work orders into multiple jobs, keeping some tasks in-house while subcontracting the rest.
For example, if a plumbing business needs to handle an extensive bathroom renovation, Field Complete can split the work order into smaller tasks — plumbing, tiling, and electrical work — allowing you to manage in-house tasks while subcontracting specialized services. This ability to streamline job management significantly enhances operational efficiency, reducing administrative burden and ensuring better oversight.
I found the mobile-first design to be helpful for creating work orders, capturing photos, and invoicing on site and sync back to the office.
However, Field Complete lacks a built-in time clock or time-tracking feature for plumbing technicians, which can be a crucial tool for businesses aiming to monitor labor hours accurately.
Some users have also reported that the software can be somewhat challenging to navigate, with certain features seeming to be in a perpetual beta phase, leading to occasional functionality issues.

Field Complete has only gotten one App Store review so far. Unfortunately, the iOS user below finds it difficult to use, with updates not rolling out soon enough to fix the problems.
Crimsonanchor’s iOS Review of Field Complete:
App is basically beta –⭐
“So many parts of this app don’t work properly, updates have been slow. My company is dropping this provider because the app is basically unusable.”
While the Capterra user review below gives a favorable opinion of FieldEdge, it also highlights the app’s lack of native integrations, severely limiting its potential as an all-around plumbing software.
Daniela C.’s Capterra Review of Field Complete:
Happy consumer – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Pros: User-friendly, great for organizing jobs and keeping track of work orders,
Cons: Lack of integration to be able to link to other softwares, other than quickbooks.”
What is plumbing software?
Plumbing software is a digital tool that helps in running the daily operations of field service businesses from scheduling jobs and dispatching technicians to tracking hours, materials, and customer payments. This software can be designed specifically for plumbing businesses, but often it’s largely designed for contractors, field service managers, and office staff who want to streamline workflows, reduce administrative work, and improve visibility across projects and crews.
For small and mid-sized plumbing companies, the right software ensures accurate payroll, faster billing, and compliance with labor and job-costing requirements. The best apps keep tabs on job costs and labor spend to keep payroll inflation down and profitability high.
How plumbing software works
Plumbing software connects field technicians to service managers and office teams through desktop and mobile apps. Mobile apps allow technicians to clock in and out, view assigned jobs, upload photos, and notes and record materials used. Web/desktop apps allow office staff to manage dispatching, job progress, and invoicing from a central dashboard.
Most solutions include drag-and-drop scheduling, GPS-based time tracking, automated invoicing and payments, digital quotes, and customer communication tools. Leading platforms like Workyard, Jobber, and Housecall Pro also integrate with payroll and accounting systems to keep job costing accurate and payroll processing error-free.
Benefits of plumbing software
Using plumbing software gives you the following advantages:
- Streamlined scheduling and dispatching – Allows you to easily assign plumbers to jobs using drag-and-drop calendars and live GPS tracking, reducing travel time and missed appointments.
- Accurate time and mileage tracking – Lets you capture work hours automatically using GPS-enabled time clocks for precise payroll and labor costing.
- Faster invoicing and payments – Enables technicians to generate quotes and invoices instantly, accept payments online, and eliminate manual billing errors.
- Improved visibility – Gives you the ability to view team locations, check job progress, and track expenses in real time.
- Enhanced customer communication – Enables technicians to send automated appointment reminders, “on my way” texts, and follow-ups to improve customer satisfaction.
- Seamless payroll and accounting integration – Lets you sync time and cost data directly to QuickBooks, Sage, or Gusto for faster payroll runs.
- Better compliance and documentation – Helps you keep digital records of hours, jobs, and materials to stay compliant with labor laws and tax reporting.
How much does plumbing software cost?
Plumbing software providers often use a per-user model (charging monthly for each active user) or a flat rate covering a set number of users. For example, Workyard starts at $6/month per user with a $50 base fee, while Jobber’s plans range from $39/month to $599/month for up to 15 users. Higher priced apps like Housecall Pro start at $79/month up to $329/month while Knowify’s plans range from $99/month to $249/month with custom enterprise options..
Implementation costs may also include setup assistance, user training, or data migration. Most modern tools are designed to help small plumbing teams be fully operational within a few days of onboarding.
What to look for in plumbing software
The best plumbing software ideally includes GPS time tracking, scheduling, mobile invoicing, and job costing tools. These should readily sync with accounting platforms like QuickBooks or Gusto to ensure accurate payroll and faster billing. Most tools already offer similar basics, so I suggest focusing on usability and automation that actually reduce admin time.
Must-haves:
- GPS time tracking & geofencing: Verifies onsite punches and logs mileage for accurate payroll.
- Scheduling & dispatch: Drag-and-drop calendars, real-time availability, and emergency scheduling.
- Invoicing & payment processing: Create estimates, convert to invoices, and accept card payments or ACH from the field.
- Job costing & reporting: Instant visibility into labor vs. materials so you can make data-driven decisions.
You can also consider extras like customer portals, inventory tracking, and offline mobile access which can help make day-to-day operations even smoother.
Nice-to-haves:
- Parts inventory
- Offline mobile mode
- Open API for custom workflows
How to choose the best plumbing software
Here are short, practical steps to choose the best plumbing software that gives you an advantage over the competition:
- Document your workflows first. Map how jobs flow from call to dispatch to completion and invoicing so you can test software against real tasks.
- Shortlist 3 products. Filter your top choices by key workflow needs such as route optimization, scheduling, or parts tracking.
- Run real-world trials. Use the mobile app on actual job days for clock-in/out, invoicing, and offline synchronization.
- Verify integrations and onboarding. Confirm QuickBooks/payroll integrations. Ask about migration help and check SLA for support response times.
- Compare total cost of ownership. Weigh subscription, add-ons and training costs against expected time savings.

Our Scoring System Explained
Our 8-part scoring system was created to help you understand the potential value of any software we review simply and fairly.
We created it after reviewing dozens of software products, which we covered in depth, but without providing a direct and simple way for readers to compare products on their merits – without spending a lot of time looking through our articles for the information they needed to make an informed decision.
Every app we review will include Customer Support and Company scores, which we’ll explain in more detail below. Many of the factors reviewed in this article will also be consistent across most (or all) of our software reviews, with some differences:
The 8 factors assessed and their contribution to a product’s overall score may differ slightly from product to product based on various factors, such as the use case we’re reviewing for, the type of business these products are tailored to, and other considerations. However, all reviews will feature an 8-part score, weighted and combined to calculate each product’s overall score.
How We Score Software
All factors in our reviews are scored on a 10-point scale – technically 11 points – from 0-10. However, we only give products a score of 0 if it does not include an essential feature at all, and we try to avoid giving out 0 scores if a product can demonstrate any functionality in line with the specific factor being reviewed.
In general, the 0-10 range translates as:
- 9.0 – 10 – One of the absolute best in its category (amazing).
- 7.5 – 8.9 – Very good, but with some minor issues (very good).
- 6.0 – 7.4 – Mediocre performance with notable shortcomings (average).
- 3.0 – 5.9 – This feature is not ready for prime time (borderline).
- 1.0 – 2.9 – This feature actually makes its product worse (unacceptable).
- 0 – The product doesn’t include this important feature at all.
How We Calculate Overall Scores
The 8 factors reviewed are weighted based on an overall total of 100%:
- Ease of Use: 20%
- Time Tracking Accuracy: 20%
- Scheduling Features: 15%
- Job Tracking: 15%
- Integrations: 10%
- Customer Support: 15%
- Company: 5%
Methodology for Each Factor
Ease of Use
We evaluate a product’s ease of use based on three main considerations:
- How easy is it to set up this app?
- How easy is it for managers to use the backend dashboard?
- How easy is it for frontline workers to use the (mobile) app?
These three considerations cover the main ways you and your team would use the software being reviewed – when you first obtain it, when someone (a manager, executive, team leader, or similar role) needs to use it to manage people, money, data, and other things, and when workers you’re tracking use the app (usually a mobile version of the software designed for frontline and/or field team members) to clock in, clock out, record time worked, or address other day-to-day needs.
Time Tracking Accuracy
Every minute matters when you’re trying to control payroll costs. This factor accounts for various features and common needs in time-tracking apps, such as…
- How accurate or precise is its GPS tracking capability?
- How accurate – and how customizable – is its geofencing feature?
- How accurate is its travel and mileage tracking (if available)?
- Can it automatically clock workers in and out based on the above?
- Can you set and/or restrict rules for clocking in and out?
- Can the app continue tracking workers while offline?
- How easy is its mobile app and/or kiosk for frontline workers?
Scheduling Features
Many construction businesses prefer to manage as many aspects of employee labor activity as possible in a single app, which is why many time-tracking apps also include worker scheduling as a core feature.
When we consider a product’s scheduling features, we look at:
- Its dashboard customizability (daily, weekly, or monthly views).
- Its project-based scheduling and visibility.
- Its real-time updates and notifications for workers.
- Its real-time map views of worker locations for best-fit scheduling.
- Its recurring schedule (copies to subsequent weeks, etc.) functionality.
Job Tracking
This factor helps you understand if the software can also provide insight into specific projects, which is particularly handy when your business deals with many customers or clients who generally need shorter-term work. Effective job tracking typically also includes accurate job costing functionality for construction companies.
We assess several things when calculating a product’s job tracking score:
- Its project-based tracking for multiple projects per day/week/etc.
- Its ability to track multiple / many projects simultaneously.
- Its use of (and your ability to customize) construction cost codes.
- Any built-in job costing views.
- Any integrations for cost coding (QuickBooks etc.)
Integrations
No business can operate on a single app, which is why integrations with other apps and tools are such important aspects of modern business software.
To calculate a product’s integration score, we’ll examine:
- How many native integrations (the simplest connection) does it offer?
- How effective and easy-to-use are its integrations with payroll software?
- Does it have robust data import and export features?
Customer Support
Learning how to use a new app can be frustrating, even if it’s meant to be the most user-friendly app around. That’s why great customer support is so essential when considering which time-tracking app to use.
Customer support scores are calculated based on:
- Live support channels available (phone, email, chat, etc.).
- Live support hours (business hours only, 24/7, etc.).
- The strength of the product’s online help center and/or FAQs.
- What other users say about support in online reviews.
Company
A great company with a highly customer-friendly approach can often make up for shortcomings in their software products – at least up to a point.
When assessing this score, we’ll examine:
- Transparency (easy-to-find pricing, etc.)
- Trial period (duration, feature availability, credit card requirements, etc.).
- Subscription flexibility (contracts, required durations, etc.).
- Ease of cancellation or pausing subscriptions.
- Customer perceptions (online product reviews).
- Website (a minor consideration, but great companies tend to have great websites).

Plumbers typically work 30 to 40 hours per week, but schedules vary based on job type, industry, and state labor laws. Many plumbers work overtime, especially in emergency repairs or large construction projects. Self-employed plumbers often set their own schedules but may work longer hours to meet client demands.
