What is Type 6 Construction?

Type 6 construction, as classified by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), refers to Fire Resistive Construction, which is designed to provide the highest level of fire resistance. 

This type of construction uses noncombustible materials, such as reinforced concrete, masonry, and protected steel for structural elements, like walls, floors, and roofs. The materials and assemblies are designed to withstand fire for extended durations, often exceeding two hours, depending on the specific requirements and codes.

Key features of Type 6 construction include thick reinforced concrete slabs (typically at least 4 inches), fireproofed steel columns and beams (using materials like sprayed-on fire-resistant coatings or gypsum), and noncombustible roof systems. 

Walls and partitions are also constructed with fire-resistant materials like concrete or masonry, providing robust barriers against heat and flames. 

This construction type is commonly used in high-rise buildings, large commercial structures, and critical infrastructure where fire safety is paramount. 

It ensures that the building can maintain its structural integrity during a fire, allowing safe evacuation and minimizing collapse risks.
