What Time Can Construction Start in Washington?
Construction start times in Washington vary by city. Most allow work from 7 a.m.–10 p.m. on weekdays, with weekend and holiday restrictions. Seattle limits impact work to 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Hunts Point, Bainbridge Island, Kennewick, Puyallup, and Spokane County have specific noise rules.
Here’s a breakdown for different areas:
General Rule: In general, construction work is allowed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends and legal holidays. Legal holidays include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
Seattle: Construction work is generally allowed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends and legal holidays. However, if construction is taking place in multifamily and neighborhood commercial zones, work is allowed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and legal holidays.
Impact construction work (pile driving, jackhammers, etc.) is limited to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and legal holidays.
Hunts Point: Construction activities causing noise exceeding 55 decibels to be transmitted across property lines are permitted only between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, excluding holidays.
Bainbridge Island: Construction activities within residential zones or within 100 feet of residential zones are prohibited between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays and before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
On Sundays and legal holidays, construction is prohibited, although work on the inside of an enclosed structure may occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Kennewick: Noise levels generated by work are allowed between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. It does not designate weekdays differently from weekends.
Puyallup: Noise emanating from temporary construction sites is allowed except between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Spokane County: Noise disturbances are exempt from the County Code between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.
